Mathematics

The mathematics faculty at The Ponds High School provides an academic, supportive environment sharing their passion for mathematics to allow students to achieve to their highest level. Our Mathematics courses aim to create confidence and enjoyment in doing mathematical activities. By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts. Students develop an awareness of how mathematics can be used to solve problems in everyday life.

The mathematics faculty endeavours to:-

·         Develop the basic numeracy skills necessary in our society, this is considered to be of paramount importance.

·         Impart favourable attitudes to learning mathematics. That is, students should derive interest and enjoyment from mathematical activities and learning.

Junior Mathematics

All students in Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) follow the NSW curriculum.

In Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), the curriculum is delivered at three different levels; Stage 5.3, 5.2 and Stage 5.1.

Students are graded into the classes based on their Stage 4 results and work ethic in the classroom. It is important for students to be studying the correct level as there are minimum recommendations for the senior courses:

·         Students who complete Stage 5.2/5.1 should select Mathematics Standard.

·         Students who complete 5.3 have the option of either Mathematics Standard or Mathematics Advanced. If they are excelling in Years 9 and 10 they should select Mathematics Advanced and consider further study in the Extension courses.

Students also have an opportunity to learn more Mathematics through elective courses in Year 9 and 10 including Trade Maths, Preparing for Senior Maths and Money Matters.

  • Mathematics Extension 1 (1 unit)
  • Mathematics Extension 2 (1 unit) in Year 12, by invitation.
